Sims Patrick Studio Wins IIDA Award For Mews Redesign

The 9^th annual International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Georgia Chapter Best of the Best Forum Design Awards took place February 27, 2014 at 200 Peachtree Street, in Atlanta, GA. Taking home an Award of Merit for Small Hospitality was Sims Patrick Studio.

Sims Patrick Studio redesigned the Mews at Graylyn International Conference Center in 2012. Once a private stable for the Bowman Gray family at the estate, the Mews has found much more purpose these days boasting 35 guest rooms, conference meeting space, a private dining area, and fitness facilities.

In the spirit of the Gray family's attention to finer things in life, the Mews renovation was a combination of "old world" charm and the modern amenities required by a conference center affiliated with a research university. All guest rooms were updated with luxurious bedding and academic level working spaces, yet eclectic furniture plans and nostalgic artwork and 3D accessories made each room feel like home. 

IIDA was founded in 1994 as the result of a merger of the Institute of Business Designers (IBD); the International Society of Interior Designers (ISID); and the Council of Federal Interior Designers (CFID). The goal of the merger was to create an international association with a united mission that would represent Interior Designers worldwide. Since that date, IIDA has worked to convene communities of Interior Designers across regions and specialties representing the interests for the entire community.

Graylyn Goes to Durham for MPI Meeting

The Carolina's chapter of Meeting Professionals International held a meeting and tradeshow yesterday for meeting planners and suppliers to attend and connect with others in the industry at the Marriott Durham City Center in Durham. MPI is a global association that believes that meeting and event planners are critical in the success of a business.

The theme for this year's trade show was "Tricks of the Trade," so we put on our thinking caps and tried to figure out the best way to make our trade show booth stand out above all others.

We wanted to incorporate a little Graylyn history in our booth to remind everyone that Graylyn is a historical estate, and finally it hit us - the Grays had two beloved Scottish Terriers, named ever so cleverly Butter and Scotch, and what do dogs do (especially those that love treats)? TRICKS!

Upon spending hours and hours on the Internet searching for battery-powered flipping dogs, we were able to locate two look-alike Scotties to be the main attraction to the Graylyn booth.

Also at our booth were stuffed Scottie dogs and butterscotch candies to play up the Butter and Scotch theme even more!

After a very productive meeting and trade show, Graylyn was chosen by the MPI committee as the best booth at show because of the flipping trick dogs.

Overall, Graylyn had a very successful time at the meeting and trade show, and we look forward to hosting the MPI meeting in January!

A Little Piece of Mews History

If you are like us here at Graylyn, you can’t get enough of the history of this charming estate. Since the Mews’ recent renovations we deemed it necessary to peel back that fresh layer of paint and show its colorful history. 

The Mews was built around the time of the manor house and was intended to house the Gray’s farm animals. “Mews” is a French word for stables; however, the farm complex contained much more than that.  

While the Grays were constructing the estate of their dreams, they hired a man by the name of Eccles Everhart, a member of the Northup & O’Brien firm, to design the Mews. The complex resembles a Normandy quadrangle and originally, all surrounding the courtyard, had caretaker’s quarters, garages, storage facilities, a forge, and poultry houses. 

Of course the Grays had to keep in mind the guests that would visit so stables were a staple in their farm complex. But no horses ever stayed there. The only animal kept in the stables was a mule named Ida that was used on the farm in the 1930s.

Another important element in the Mews was the poultry farm. Louie D. Baker was the poultryman and a loyal employee on the Graylyn estate for nearly 20 years, until it was given to the Medical School in 1946. During his time at Graylyn, he supervised the production of 2,100,000 eggs, 200,000 chicks, 60,000 fryers, 35,000 boilers, 15,000 hens, 5,000 capons, and 200 turkeys. 

Louie D. Baker bought the poultry and equipment from the Grays and started his own business in Rural Hall when Graylyn was given to the Medical School. 

But if you think that these renovations may take away from its unique history, think again. Take a walk through the entrance gates of the Mews you are still taken back into what was once a farm and a life of Mr. and Mrs. Bowman Gray.
